Armenian Human Rights Defender addresses UN human rights chief on Karen Petrosyan’s death case

RA Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Karen Andreasyan has sent a letter to the UN high commissioner for human rights Navi Pillay on the death case of Armenian peasant Karen Petrosyan, who died in Azerbaijani captivity. In his letter Andreasyan said in particular; “I express my deepest concern about the tortures and murders of Armenian captives in Azerbaijan. Particularly the case of Karen Petrosyan (who obviously had mental problems), who was humiliated and tortured by the Azerbaijani side as if he was a saboteur and was later claimed by Azerbaijan as “unexpectedly dead from a heart failure” is alarming not only for us, but for the international community as a whole.”.

Economist Tatul Manaseryan calls on the Government to deepen military-industrial cooperation with Russia, taking advantage of the Western sanctions against the country. "We, for some reason, are now  limiting ourselves only to the issue of increasing the export volumes of agricultural products, but this is not the limit. We must not forget the other important sectors. For example, I would call on the Government to take steps to deepen the military-industrial cooperation with Russia," reports “Armenpress”, citing Manaseryan.

On Saturday, Aug. 23, around 600 people demonstrated in Paris to show their support to Kurds and Yazidis—victims of massacres committed by the Islamic State (IS) in Iraqi Kurdistan—and to advocate for humanitarian aid for those who were forced to flee, Jean Eckian reports from Paris.

The group included representatives from the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) and the Armenian Institute of France.

Poll: One in 4 Russians believes Karabakh is an independent state

Around 24 percent of Russian citizens consider Nagrono-Karabakh an independent state, the survey showed. According to the poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 11 percent of Russians believe that this territory is a part of Armenia, and only nine percent think that it belongs to Azerbaijan. Half of the respondents found it difficult to respond.

When Moscow launched an embargo on certain imports from the countries which have supported sanctions against Russia, Russian economists focused on ways of import substitution and opening new markets for the country.

“To restore broken dialogues and undermined friendships between people, it is necessary to develop humanitarian and economic contacts. As for the dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan, considering the Nagorno-Karabakh factor, economic issues could play a big and important role,” Denis Tyurin says. He thinks that “if politicians of Armenia and Azerbaijan give priority to increasing the living standards of the population and development of economic ties between regions of Armenia and Azerbaijan, it would encourage the development of political dialogue.”
