Parliamentary Spokesman of the Armenian Minority in Hungary Dr. Tamás Turgyán hosted the 24th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Armenia at a diplomatic reception at the Adam Palace in Budapest, Hungary.
The ambassadors of Belarus, Belgium, Finland, Iran, Israel, Cyprus, Poland, Qatar, and high ranking representatives from the diplomatic missions of Angola, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tunisia and the US attended the event. Around 50 guests were present, including members of the private sector, academic policy institutes, NGOs, and journalists.
In his keynote speech, Dr. Turgyán highlighted the important role of the Armenian minority in mediating for the efficient settlement of bilateral relations and the conflict that ensued as the result of the extradition of an Azeri murderer. On 31 August 2012, Armenia severed relations with Hungary following the extradition of Ramil Safarov – convicted of murdering Armenian Lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan in Hungary in 2004 – to Azerbaijan. The murderer has been sent to Baku where he was immediately pardoned and glorified.
The parliamentary spokesman added that his cabinet is fully committed to assisting both governments to reconsider their position on bilateral issues.
He raised his glass to the well-being and prosperity of the people of Armenia and expressed his optimism that the severed relations would be reinstated in the future in order to celebrate, yet again, the friendship and solidarity between the two nations.
